Continence Clinic
Our nurse-led Outpatient Continence Clinic provides assessment, investigations and advice for people experiencing urinary and faecal incontinence issues in an outpatient setting. The clinic does not provide services to hospital inpatients.
Services provided by our team of Continence Clinical Nurse Specialists include:
- conservative management and strategies, including:
- fluid and dietary advice
- bladder retraining
- pelvic floor muscle advice and support
- bowel and constipation management
- toileting programs
- education and advice on continence aids and equipment
- assessing eligibility to access funding subsidies and referral to other agencies
- specialist referrals.
The clinic also removes urinary catheters (which is called a trial of void) on receipt of a medical referral. Please note appointments for this procedure are usually given within 14 days of triaging the referral due to availability of clinic resources.
Referral criteria
All Continence Clinic referrals are managed through the Central Referral Service (external site) or via the internal E-Referral service.
Adult patients can be referred by their general practitioner (GP) or specialist medical practitioner after relevant medical investigations. The clinic does not accept referrals from allied health or nursing staff.
Paediatric patients require a full assessment by a paediatrician for the referring issue before being referred to the continence clinic for additional support. Paediatric patient referrals are accepted for children from the age of 4 years old for constipation/bowel issues or from 5 ½ years old for daytime wetting issues.
Children experiencing only night-time wetting require a referral to the Enuresis nurse at Kwinana Community Health and Development Centre Enuresis clinic – phone 9419 2266 or fax 9439 1088.
