Taking charge of recycling

Rockingham General Hospital has expanded its recycling program to include batteries.

Clean up Australia Day, held earlier this month, marked the beginning of a permanent hospital-wide ongoing battery collection and recycling program.

Rockingham Peel Group Patient Support Services Manager Vicki Lea explained that staff have become more environmentally aware in recent years and this program reflects these changes in awareness.

“Regulations are attached to clinical waste and pharmaceuticals, but much of the material, if properly handled, is completely recyclable,” said Vicki.

“There are many different types of batteries used throughout a hospital and we’d prefer not to have these corrosive materials end up in landfill.”

“As a large organisation that generates many distinct categories of waste, this new initiative will go a long way towards refining the hospital’s recycling program and available disposal methods.”
