Rockingham Peel Group (RkPG) celebrated DonateLife Week with a series of events to raise the awareness and importance of organ donation.

Events included special screenings of the Australian Story documentary Staying’ Alive and a free sausage sizzle provided by the Rotary Club of Rockingham and the hospital’s Auxiliary.

RkPG Medical Co-director Acute and Community Medicine Dr Bheemasenachar Prasad said the hospital was proud to be associated with the aims of DonateLife since becoming the first non-tertiary WA public hospital in 2014 to be accredited for the organ donation program.

“Having organ retrieval capabilities onsite has meant that we have a pivotal role in offering new life for patients on the organ transplant waiting list,” Dr Prasad said.

“This streamlines the donation process for families because donors no longer need to be moved to a tertiary hospital in Perth.

“Families can find it difficult to allow their loved one to be transferred elsewhere and this helps to remove one obstacle in the process.”

DonateLife Clinical Nurse Consultant Renee Deleuil said the week was aimed at encouraging the community to join the Australian Organ Donor Register (AODR) and help end the wait for more than 1,500 Australians currently on the transplant waiting lists.

“Registering on the AODR and sharing your decision with family and friends is important as it leaves your family in no doubt of your decision to save lives as an organ and tissue donor,” said Ms Deleuil.
